“Dream Pop” - Three for Free

Not much energy was expended, but we found two definitions of “dream pop:”
     1. The “Allmusic Guide to Electronica” defines dream pop as "an atmospheric subgenre of alternative rock that relies on sonic textures as much as melody."
     2. The website http://altmusic.about.com/od/genres/a/genreguide.htm defines dream pop as “a precursor to shoegaze, dream-pop described a community of English acts centered around the Cocteau Twins. Breathy and ethereal, their take on 'pop' was particularly ambient, with a focus on texture.”

Armed with those definitions, we are prepared for rapid-fire misidentifications of bands as belonging to or not belonging within the dream pop genre. However, we are instead going to allow bands to self-select. That is, if a band identifies its song as being dream pop, then it is. Who are we to argue? In discussing sports, disagreements are almost encouraged, since positions can be defended by using facts. Disagreements about music are more aligned with discussions about your favorite number; only the Shelton character on television's "The Big Bang Theory" can build a fact-based case around one number ("73") being better than all other numbers.
Satchmode is a duo based in Los Angeles. When releasing the debut single “Old Fears” onto Soundcloud, Gabe Donnay and Adam Boukis identified the song as being dream pop. They also enabled free downloads, at least for now. We enjoy the entire song, but particularly appreciate the sequence of a lull at 2:15 followed by the energy at 2:32. The song is about a relationship, and the energetic section at the 2:32 mark is the commitment that “I wanna do it right this time!”

Letting Up Despite Great Faults is another dream pop band from Los Angeles, kinda. The band actually is based in Los Angeles, California and Austin, Texas. The members of the band are Mike Lee,  Kent Zambrana,  Annah Fisette, and Daniel Schmidt.

Houses is comprised of Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messina, who claim Chicago as their hometown. However, the boyfriend-girlfriend duo is now based in Los Angeles. Messina provides vocals, while Tortoriello plays a variety of instruments and is the male voice.

Admittedly, the previous one and this one are revisits to Indie Obsessive. But the songs deserve the exposure. “Minimal Love” is a song we have been listening to regularly since we first heard it. Freddie Dickson identifies his hometown as Shepherd’s Bush, London. Currently, “Minimal Love” is being offered as a free download, if you register an email address and a birth date (CLICK HERE).
