Three for Free, Legal and Recommended (“FL&R”) – The October Entry

Free and Legal Downloads? Yes, at least temporarily. Bands often temporarily permit free downloads of new releases.  The end of the offer might be based upon reaching a maximum number of downloads or the expiration of some period of time.  But at least for now, here are songs that qualify as Free, Legal and Recommended (FL&R) downloads.

Young Tongue (previously The Baker Family) is an Austin, Texas band that includes a husband/wife combination. The five membrs are Stuart Baker (vocals, guitar, and banjo), Liz Baker (vocals and keys), Nathan Ribner (bass), Darryl Schomberg II (drums) and Travis Larrew (guitar). All reports indicate that the band puts on a great live show. On November 24, we will be able to verify the accuracy of the reports, since Young Tongue is scheduled to visit the Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. Also on the band’s schedule is the release of the album “Death Rattle” on November 11, 2014.
Young Tongue self-describes the genre in which it resides in a variety of ways, depending upon where you look. But the description we would apply to “Heavy Metal Thunder” is Indie Progressive Rock, since the song includes a number of occasions in which there are rock progressions.

Hunter as a Horse moves this post to a different genre and a different continent. This is a duo with an appreciation for Psychedelic Dreampop and a base in London. The members are Mia van Wyk and Paul Gala.

It’s back to Austin for the third song. The genre of Just Walden is Piano Rock. While the piano plays an important role in “Summer Day Charade,” the depth of the song is defined by a number of instruments. The floating guitar, with its swells and dips (for example, starting at 2:20), is at least as important as the piano. And the kick drum occasionally takes center stage.
Just Walden is/are Aaron Eichenseer (bass and guitar), Taylor Eichenseer (percussion/ and guitar), Danny Ferraro (vocals, piano, synth and guitar), and Alex Margolin (percussion and synth).

Staying with the piano for a bonus song, Jen Wood had a song featured on KEXP this month and we “Fell in Love.” The song has a simple beginning and returns to that simplicity often, but also ventures into complexity. Jen Wood is from Seattle. Her LP, “Wilderness,” was released last week.
