Their pride in their craft is evident while
listening to “Modern Youth,” a single from Shiny Diamonds. This cannot be a
song that effortlessly came together. “Modern Youth” does not follow a uniform
flow. Instead contributions, which are sometimes subtle and other times featured,
decorate the melody. While torturing a trite expression, it is fair to state that
the bedazzle is in the detail. Just as one example, listen to the 13 seconds that
begin at 0:50, as an attention-gripping bass line is joined by chimes-like notes
before the bass crescendos to a melodic shout of “Wooo” and a brief synth.
Much of “Modern Youth” features the bass. In
comparison, aggressive guitar is plays a significant role during the final minute, as the
lyrics bring a warning of eventual doom for those currently enjoying their
youth. Shiny Diamonds describes its sound as avant-garde bass and synth-driven Indie
Rock from Washington DC. The credits of “Modern Youth” identify the contributors
as Marc DeRusso (vocals, bass), Matt Ritter (drums, vocals), Clint Stelfox
(guitars, synths), and Dave Hart (guitars).
