“Discover” by Oskar Braves – A Song Review

Oskar Braves’ lyrical commentary on social media is well timed. Currently, the CEO of Facebook is making television appearances to apologize. “Discover” is unconcerned with data harvests and leaks, instead shining a light on the potential impact of basing your perception of self-worth on regular visits to social media sites.

The rhythm section in “Discover” is never shy or introverted, but becomes more assertive as the song progresses. Following a dream state bridge, the percussion explosively rolls its way to the forefront (at 3:08), leading a forceful charge that lasts until the final seconds of the track. Similarly, the guitar wails and wanes are more pronounced in the later stages of “Discover.”

In discussing “Discover,” Oskar Braves stated:
The song derives from people using social media as a platform to project a life which doesn’t reflect their true existence. “Twitter famous” or “Instagram famous” personal highlighting how good their life is to the masses of followers when in reality it might not be the case. The song also dips into the effects social media has on the everyday user. The lyrics “sleepless nights, one eye shut and refresh” optimizes this idea. We’ve all been there, the constant refreshing of pages to see what pointless posts are being written, not wanting to miss a shred of meaningless information which in turn will have no effect on you whatsoever. The chorus is a call out to people take everything on social media with a pinch of salt. Don’t get too caught up with the so called “famous” interweb stars, their life is not better than yours. We are all equals in the real world.

Oskar Braves is a Scottish band hailing from Dunfermline, Fife. The members are David Stevens (vocals), Grant Allan (guitar), Conor Young (guitar), Connor Marnie (bass), and Andrew Davidson (drums). “Discover” was written by Grant Allan.

Your oh-so-precious life
Repeat and send
Falsify the truth
Cause there's nothing better for us to do

Glorify all you've ever known
Preach a lie
Giving snippets of a house
That you've neglected
And are ashamed to call a home

How long ‘til you discover
That it's all the same to me
I hope it brings you comfort
That you’re all the same to me

Thumbs bent
Held forever more
Mind recessed life under control
Do you want it?
Well we don’t really have a choice

Sleepless nights
One eye shut and refresh
There's nothing quite like having a routine
That means nothing
Who are you trying to please?

How long ‘til you discover
That it's all the same to me
I hope it brings you comfort
That you’re all the same to me
That you’re all the same to me

How long ‘til you discover
That it's all the same to me
I hope it brings you comfort
That you’re all the same to me
[Repeat 2x]
