“90s Kid” by Trevor Myall – A Song Review

Lyrics from Trevor Myall often reflect his past. That’s particularly true of the title track of his EP “One Way Ticket,” which talks about his journey from early years in Canada (Vancouver and Newfoundland), his musical education in Boston, and his move to Los Angeles. In “90s Kid” Myall again references his childhood. The song is about the simplicity of the 1990s, as compared to current times.

Lyrics of “90s Kid” by Trevor Myall
Take me to my old house
With the tree fort in the backyard
That the windstorm blew the roof off
We don’t hang there anymore

Meet me in the games room
On the futon eatin' junk food
Till the night falls
Playing foosball and Nintendo 64

Remember when the headlines were just for mom & dad while
We played spotlight in the dark
Now the news is all I’m hearing and kids better be praying
Before they leave that door

Oh my my my my my do you wanna go back?
Do you wanna go back? Do you wanna go back?
Do you wanna go back for just one
Ni-ni-ni-ni-night do you wanna go back?
Do you wanna go back? Do you wanna go back?
Yeah so do I

So do I

Lately I’ve been sitting
Near the exit at the movies
Getting restless during loud scenes
I don’t feel safe anymore

Lately I’ve been thinking
Bout the future, if a blue shirt's
Gonna save me, or berate me
Or take away the man I love

Remember when the headlines were just for mom & dad while
We played spotlight in the dark
Now the news is all I’m hearing and kids better be praying
Before they leave that door, oh my

Oh my my my my my do you wanna go back?
Do you wanna go back? Do you wanna go back?
Do you wanna go back for just one
Ni-ni-ni-ni-night do you wanna go back?
Do you wanna go back? Do you wanna go back?
Yeah so do I

But time makes a fool out of dreamers
And the whole damn world still needs us
Where are the superheroes I grew up with?
Just wanna be a comeback 90s kid
90s kid, just wanna be a comeback 90s kid
Oh, 90s kid

I don’t know what to do but I gotta do something
I don’t know what to do but ain’t time to do nothing
I don’t know what to do but I better do something
Ain’t time to do nothing
[Repeated 4x – on last one, lyrically overlay the following]

Life is a one way ticket
Don’t you ever forget it, no
You only got this moment
Don’t wanna regret it, no
Life is a one way ticket
Don’t you ever forget it, no
You only got this moment
Don’t wanna regret it, no

"Say goodbye everybody"
"Goodbye everybody"
"Goodbye everybody"
"Goodbye everybody"
