“The Ride” by Volunteer - A Song Feature

The song puts words to the recognition and acceptance of morality. It’s a well-timed release, now when even the hint of a symptom of a virus brings anxiety. But Volunteer describes “The Ride” as a “break-up letter to my fear of death.” We describe the single as an intelligently written perspective on existence skillfully set to instrumentation that “walks the walk” by fearlessly ushering instruments into and out of the melody. “The Ride” even shifts among genres. Particularly well executed is the segment of increased allegiance to Rock sensibilities that begins just prior to the three-minute mark. That segment includes a crescendo and concludes at 3:21 with a seamless drop.

Volunteer is the performance name of vocalist/songwriter Cory Quintard who started in Orlando, Florida, but now resides in Nashville. In talking about “The Ride,” he explained:
“’The Ride’ is a break-up letter to my fear of death. Admittedly, it’s not a clean break. In these uncertain days, I’m sure many of us (and I’m no different) carry some anxiety around the topic on a daily basis. This is my favorite song I’ve written to date. I wrote it when I had the morbid thought that everybody I know is going to die someday. Then I literally broke down in tears thinking about witnessing some of those deaths and how sad I would be. Then I started thinking ‘who will be sad when I die?’ And a minute later, I had the first verse. The rest of the song came quickly from a contemplative place of looking back on the first 30 years of my life and grieving the time I wasted on people pleasing and managing other people’s perception of me. Red in Shawshank Redemption sums this song up best: ‘Get busy living or get busy dying.’ I recorded this song with producer Will Mikkelson at his studio in Nashville, TN.”

Volunteer is working to drop his debut full-length album in October 2020. The track "The Ride” will be the album's title-track.

Lyrics of “The Ride” by Volunteer
One day it hit me right between the eyes
Everything I’ve ever loved is someday gonna die
The one and only constant here is time
And every single moment carries me closer to mine

I’m not gonna live forever
Even now my face is lined
Death’s not gonna loose the tether
I just hope he takes his time
I guess that I just like the ride

All the years I tried to be someone
Every moment that I lived for arrived and then was done
With it went the feeling that I longed for
It left me all alone to wait for more

I’m not gonna live forever
Even now my face is lined
Death’s not gonna loose the tether
I just hope he takes his time
I guess that I just like the ride

Everything I aimed for became the thing to live for
Always barely out of reach
You can always hedge your bets
Or you can try to up your chance
Or you can just enjoy the dance

I’m not gonna live forever
Even now my face is lined
Death’s not gonna loose the tether
I just hope he takes his time

I’m not gonna live forever
And I can’t pause and hit rewind
Death’s not gonna loose the tether
Oh, I just hope he takes his time
Fuck it, I just like the ride
