“Alone” by Hoofa – A Song Feature

“Alone” is a single with easily distinguishable, but equally appealing, first and second halves that are joined together by ingeniously composed connective tissue. The song from London’s Hoofa begins with a lonely voice accompanied by atmospheric instruments and a guitar that maintains a steady rhythm having the feel of a mechanical clock. In comparison, the rhythm in the second half is kept by less regimented percussion, while the other instruments are more forceful and melodic than in the first half.

As praiseworthy as the two halves of “Alone” are, it’s the transition that desires the arms-raised bend at the waist. At the 1:13 mark, the reverberated backing vocals are heard for the first time. Seconds later, a crescendo is signaled by a guitar strum (1:19) having an elegance, which is a term that isn’t typically applied to a simple strum. Is that a 12-strong guitar? The crescendo carries “Alone” to its second half.

Hoofa is James Rooney and Alan Thompson of London. Talking about their single: “’Alone’ captures the emotional rise and fall of trying to do things on your own, drawn from their experiences of home recording, producing and managing themselves for the past few years.” It is the first of 6 releases from Hoofa in 2020. The song is mixed by Ed Heaton and mastered by Barry Grint (Everything Everything / Foals).

Lyrics of “Alone” by Hoofa
Alone
I can't do this on my own
Bullet forts and pillow thrones
Alone
Oh Oh Oh Oh

If someone hears this cry
Make your feelings known
Oh
A glass house shattered by the first stone
Anyone could have thrown

Alone
No command to call my own
No reinforcements this side of Rome
Alone
Oh Oh Oh
Alone

A crowded room stares at their phone
A part of them, that they can't disown
Alone
Oh Oh Oh
Alone

First one in and last one home
Left the lights on so no one would know
Alone
Oh Oh Oh
