“Rock Bottom” by Stephanie Rice - A Song Feature

If you turn on cable news, it’s just a matter of time before someone says that we need to listen to the infectious disease experts. Well, we recommend listening to Stephanie Rice. At times, she’s had one eye on the path to a career as a research scientist and is a published author on HIV research. But we all have a dominant eye; Stephanie’s is on her music.

In the single “Rock Bottom,” Stephanie Rice shows that she has a toolbox of skills in presenting her message. Within three minutes, she moves among a hushed rhythmic approach for the verses (“I know…”), a smooth melodic confessional approach during the chorus (“Now here’s the sad and ugly truth…”), and a lush choral approach during a post chorus (“Oh oh oh rock bottom”). Additionally, there is angelic falsetto starting at 2:08.

Regarding the motivation of the song, Stephanie Rice explained:
“I was alone - had nowhere to go - and was sitting on an air mattress with a hole in it. As I sank to the floor, it felt like I was sinking to 'rock bottom.' And the more time that passed - the worse that it felt. Everyone says that time will heal, I don’t think that’s true sometimes. The more time that passed, the further I fell. Having to admit that to myself was the inspiration behind the song. Accepting the 'sad and ugly' truth, enabled me to let go. Letting go meant I could get up off the floor.
This song was written and recorded on a rainy California day, as I rummaged through memories that persist in my mind. I read once that there’s no such thing as ‘a long time ago’ just memories that mean more than others. These types of memories are the ones worth sharing, worth feeling, worth exploring because they become the stepping stones that help us climb out of our ‘rock bottom.’ This song is very personal and special to me - and my heart is so happy that it’s now yours.”

Stephanie Rice is from Texarkana, Texas. But she is now based in Los Angeles.

Lyrics of “Rock Bottom” by Stephanie Rice
I know
It was a long time ago
But I can’t let it go
I know
It was a long time ago
But I died
Cause you left
And now I’m just a ghost

I know
You saw me in the rearview
And I can’t let it go
No joke
All my bones collapsed for you
But you won’t
Know the depths
The depths that I fell to

Now here’s the sad and ugly truth
All my life I’ve been waiting on you
They say time heals everything
But I just keep falling further
And it’s the sad and ugly truth
From rock bottom

Oh oh oh rock bottom
Oh oh oh rock bottom

I know
I shouldn’t be saying these things
But did you ever know?
I hoped
You’d be coming back my way
I hoped
To help me cope
But now I’m letting go

Now here’s the sad and ugly truth
All my life I’ve been waiting on you
They say time heals everything
But I just keep falling further
And it’s the sad and ugly truth
From rock bottom

Oh oh oh rock bottom
Oh oh oh rock bottom
Oh oh oh rock bottom
Oh oh oh rock bottom

Everyone said give it time
I gave it a year
One year turned to five

I know
It was a long time ago
But I can’t let it go
I know
It was a long time ago
But I died
Cause you left
And now I’m just a ghost

Oh oh oh rock bottom
Oh oh oh rock bottom
Rock bottom
