“Wishes and Wants” by Mike Stocksdale – A Song Feature

Mike Stocksdale is a master at crafting lyrics that are clever, insightful and thought-provoking. It’s a combination that many songwriters target, but very few achieve.  The lyrics of “Wishes and Wants” are particularly gripping:
I wanna break out of my skin
I am a prisoner in these cells
I wanna be anywhere else
But I've grown accustomed to these walls

Stockdale’s voice and finger-picking guitar seem tailored for his message. He is a native of Los Angeles and received a technical education in guitar from the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood.

Lyrics of “Wishes and Wants” by Mike Stocksdale
I wanna break out of my skin
I am a prisoner in these cells
I wanna be anywhere else
But I've grown accustomed to these walls

Nobody's leaving here alive
She shouted as the midnight starlight fell upon her eyes
As if I didn't know it
As if I'd try to take it all when it was time to go
When it was time to go

What's the difference between wishes and wants?
Between the things we say we need
And what we already got
Between the art we have made and stuff that we just bought
What's the difference between wishes and wants?

I wanna sleep a thousand years
I can't even make it through the night
I wanna knock down all my fears
They've kept me up half my life
You only get one shot at this
She whispered as the morning dawn
Broke open through the clouds
And I guess I always knew it
But only heard it clearly when it echoed from her mouth
When it echoed from her mouth

What's the difference between wishes and wants?
Between the things we say we need and what we already got
Between the art we have made and stuff that we just bought
What's the difference
What's the difference between wishes and wants?

Wishes and wants

She called me out a hundred times
If only I'd listened like I should
I wrote a hundred thousand lies
'Cause sometimes the truth don't sound so good

You could be the tallest tree
She told me in the doorway
With a suitcase by her feet
But if nobody's around still the loudest fall
Is only silence not a sound
Like you never made a sound

What's the difference between wishes and wants?
Between the things we say we need and what we already got
Between the art we have made and stuff that we just bought
Man, what's the difference, what's the difference, what's the difference
Between wishes and wants?

Wishes and wants
Wishes and wants
