A Darker Side (Part I) – Majical Cloudz

This is the first of two blog entries with something of a dark side (for Part II, CLICK HERE). The artist is Majical Cloudz and the song is “Childhood's End.” Majical Cloudz is comprised of the singing of Devon Welsh and the electronics of Matthew Otto. They are based in Montreal.
According to their Facebook page, “Majical Cloudz is a music project and performance event. Negative and ecstatic.” Well, “Childhood’s End” is certainly not on the ecstatic end of the negative-to-ecstatic spectrum. But it’s not really negative either. The song has a theme that is dark and heavy. Despite the simplicity of the lyrics, the song is thought provoking.
The lyrics refer to the death of someone’s father. But interestingly, it is the father of Devon Welsh who plays the elderly gentleman in the video. It is not the father's first time working with Majical Cloudz, because Kenneth Welsh has played instruments in earlier releases. Moreover, it is not Kenneth Welsh's first time on camera, since he was among the cast of the television program Twin Peaks. Below are the melancholy lyrics and a choice between the Soundcloud and YouTube versions of the song:
Someone died, gunshot right outside
Your father, he is dead
I see him in my head
Childhood's end
Goodbye my holy friend
Love me, it's a sin
Can you see me caving in?

Went down, went down, went down
Went down, went down, went down
It's weighing down, weighing down, weighing down
On me, me, me
Me, me, me
Me, me, me
Me, me, me.

Brothers feel
Killing time standing in the field
Our fate, it is sealed
At birth we made a deal
I don't cry
God, tell me why
Love, death, night flight
Best friend crucified.

Went down, went down, went down
Went down, went down, went down
It's weighing down, weighing down, weighing down
On me, me, me
Me, me, me
Me, me, me
Me, me, me.

Won't someone come
Won't someone come
Won't someone come
Won't someone come
Won't someone
For me, me, me
Me, me, me
Me, me, me
Me, me, me.

For a taste of a less serious offering of Majical Cloudz, here is a Free, Legal and Recommended download of "Dream World," which features Grimes.
