Bands often temporarily permit free downloads of new releases. The end of the offer may be based upon reaching a maximum number of downloads or the expiration of some period of time. But at least for now, here are songs that qualify as Free, Legal and Recommended (FLR) downloads.
Meursault made a significant splash in 2012, but the U.S. was outside the splash zone. Meursault is an eight-member band based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The members are Neil Pennycook, Calum MacLeod, Pete Harvey, Rob St. John, Kate Miguda, Sam Mallalieu, Lorcan Doherty, and Ben Fletcher.
"Dirt & the Roots" is being offered as a free download by the recording label of Meursalt. Because of the selection of percussion, the song has an electronica feel, particularly at the start. But if you pay attention to the contrast of the two "lead" vocalists and to the guitar, the song departs from electronica.

Rigbi is a band from Sparta, New Jersey. In a number of their songs, they use low tech percussion to their advantage, such as drum stick-to-drum stick rhythm. In “Leaving Home,” it’s a glockenspiel that is played in a manner that might only require a toy version of the instrument.
The waveform of the “Leaving Home” possesses the characteristic that never fails to attract our attention. Namely, the amplitude steadily increases. Sometimes the amplitude has an upward ramp because the instruments in a song increase in volume. Other times the ramp is a consequence of regularly adding instruments. In the case of the “Leaving Home” waveform, it’s both - instruments increase in intensity as other instruments are added.
The members of Rigbi are Brian Cornish (drums), Jon Irizarry (guitar, vocals), Pat Maloney (keyboard, percussion), and Randy Sabo (bass).

Rae Morris has a tendency to allow free downloads of her singles, but on a temporary basis. A while back, her song “Grow” was introduced to Indie Obsessive as a free download. Now, the young (19 years old) singer-songwriter from Blackpool is offering “Skin.” In the song “Skin,” it is the use of echo that attracts us, such as at the 1:00 mark of the track. But we also enjoy the string instruments and the power of Morris' voice.
