Chariots – An EP Review

Forty years ago (April 1976), Paul McCartney noted and then asked, “Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs; and what's wrong with that?” Well, his songs aren’t silly, but Chariots emphatically answered with the self-titled EP that was released last month – the vehicle doesn’t matter (love song or other theme), beauty deserves appreciation.

Chariots is the performance name of Tom Read of Oxford, UK. He refers to his music as “Indie Pop for Dreamers.” At least three of the five tracks on the “Chariots” EP are love songs. We are particularly fond of “Crashing” and “Love Is the Weapon.” The lyrics have a sophistication and the production and arrangement have an elegance that carry the tracks away from the first adjective in McCartney's reference to a type of song. Still, even if the lyrical sophistication were stripped away, we would recommend the music of Chariots. Hey, what's wrong with that?
