Leave the world in a better condition for your children? That’s not the goal presented in “On a Midnight Street.” The goal is more modest – “I want to be around to see my daughter grow older in a world that still has some beauty.” Matthew Hegarty of Matthew and the Atlas wrote the lyrics as a new father with a concern of long-term effects of global change. The lyrics are pasted below.
Matthew and the Atlas are based in Aldershot, England. The members are Matt Hegarty, James Drohan, Tommy Heap, Alex Roberts and Emma Gatrill.

Lyrics of “On a Midnight Street” by Matthew and the Atlas
I’m lost on an evening tide,
A red ocean into a northern sky
And the deep water moves
Like grey ribbons on a wind.
I’ve always seen a beauty in it
It’s a slow change,
It’s hard to recognize it,
And the myths of the modern age always dark in the door
Always the dawn.
Well the light it shone, but we were living in the dark
Now the thrill has gone, yeah we couldn’t find a spark
In that failing light, we were pulling at the seams
Yeah it seemed to me, we were living in a dream,
We were living in a… dream
See I don’t want to let her down, it’s a fear in the dark
I want to be around to see my daughter grow older in a world that still has some beauty
It’s a siren on a midnight street, but when no one’s listening, It’s hard to compete
For each man’s meaning is as large the world he’s living in,
The world he’s living in.
Well the light it shone, but we were living in the dark
Now the thrill has gone, yeah we couldn’t find a spark
In that failing light, we were pulling at the seams
Yeah it seemed to me, we were living in a dream,
We were living in a… dream
We were living in the dark
Yeah we couldn't find a spark
In that failing light, we were pulling at the seams
Yeah it seemed to me
We were living in a dream
We were living in a ...
As the light shown, we were living in the dark
Now the thrill is gone
We couldn't find a spark
In that failing light we were pulling at the seams
Yeah it seemed to me
We were living in a dream
We were living in a ... dream
We were living in a ... dream
