Go By Ocean at Bottom of the Hill – A Concert Review

We didn’t need a reminder of how fortunate we are to reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, but seeing Go By Ocean last night provided one. The band performed a setlist (pictured in this post) blending songs from their debut album with ones that will be included on their upcoming sophomore album, “The Sun Machine.” The album is scheduled for release later this year.
The band’s performance was at Bottom of the Hill, a venue that continues to merit praise for accommodating the needs of local bands. At the end of the evening, our favorite song of Go By Ocean was one from the upcoming album. The track “Ring Around the Sun.” combines attractive elements of early songs. Specifically, it includes the Southern Rock guitar of “Shadow Fades” and the band vocals that make the final minute of “Whatcha Know About It” special. When asked about the timing of public release of “Ring Around the Sun,” frontman Ryan McCaffrey indicated that it will be timed with the album drop.
The favorite performance feature of the evening was the lap slide guitar play.  Go By Ocean added a new member, their keyboard player, as it was his first live show with the band. They had great chemistry and we wouldn't have known had McCaffrey not announced it during their performance.
