“It’s Cold Outside” by Fifth Dawn – A Song Review

Fifth Dawn is explosive – a combination of penetrating vocals, meaningful lyrics, and powerful instrumentation. The explosiveness of the Australian band is demonstrated with the song “It’s Cold Outside” from their ten-track debut album “Duality.” The song begins with an alluring guitar hook, which is soon joined by calm yet impassioned vocals describing the lingering internal monsters that impede change. When the chorus is reached, the calmness ends and the instruments take on a force of their own.

Fifth Dawn has gained deserved traction in Australia, but it’s only since the release of “Duality” that the U.S. has become aware of the exceptionally strong sound of the band from Western Sydney. The members of Fifth Dawn are Samantha Faul (vocals), Mark Robertson (lead guitar), Jamie Panucci (rhythm guitar), and Ethan Pye (bass).

As described in the press materials for the song:
“’It’s Cold Outside’ is a powerful alternative rock track that delves deeply into the any monsters in your head. Sometimes they’re silent but other times they can be fully formed and be quite overpowering. ‘It’s Cold Outside’ – when it is said, is basically a metaphor for it being cold everywhere outside your mind. It’s the feeling of dread that something bad is going to happen, or the constant fear of not knowing.”

Notably, the songs from the “Duality” album are not dark. The album was intended as a split concept of both past and present – “where shifting perspectives can lead you on a positive path. We all have things we may struggle with that we must overcome, but it’s ultimately our minds that get the better of us which can be quite detrimental to our health. The split concept revolves around progression and how you need a balance of good and bad to really hone in on that greater perspective. Sometimes we get bogged down in troubling thoughts and experiences that will only hurt us, and we need a plan to move forward in a positive way.”

Lyrics of “It’s Cold Outside” by Fifth Dawn
These monsters linger inside me
Trying to escape my head
They said all along
The world was a storm
That all the passion was forced inside me
You were the voice in
You were the voice inside my head
Bursting in silence
And now you're a figure
It's cold outside
Why can't I change?
Like I'm ready for

Like you're living undone
You were not scared
You were the voice in
You were the voice in
Like you're living in fearing that you're dead
You were that voice inside my head
"Be braver, be bolder."
It's cold outside
Now why can't I change?
The air it, is thicker
It's cold outside
Now why can't I change?

Almighty deeds of a sinner
Sorrowing ghosts of her innocent mind
With all that she loved
She's falling short of what she wanted to relieve inside her
You were the voice in
You were the voice inside my head
Bursting in silence
And now you're a figure
It's cold outside
Why can't I change?
Like I'm ready for!

Like you're living undone
You were not scared
You were the voice in
You were the voice in
Like you're living in fearing that you're dead
You were that voice inside my head
"Be braver, be bolder."
It's cold outside
Now why can't I change?
The air it, is thicker
It's cold outside
Now why can't I change?
Now why can't I change?
I'm wasted time

Why can't I change?
I'm alive in this place
I'm alone in this world
