"Come Over” by Morganway – A Song Feature

Morganway self-identifies its sound as Americana or Alt-Country, but “Come Over” refuses to cooperate and defies attempts at genre-specific labels. Certainly, it will be a concert favorite, since it’s a vocal belter. The power vocals invite audience appreciation and participation. And the varied musical influences ensure that “Come Over” remains appealing throughout its 4-minute (plus) lifespan.

Despite being a genre blender, “Come Over” is polished and fluid. Unquestionably, the song is Bluesy and the vocals radiate a soulfulness. Interestingly, during early verses, the lead guitar cooperates with the fiddle and borrows Shoegaze sensibilities. But the song is most aligned with Rock during the bridge that begins around 2:30. The guitar is the driving force during the bridge, while the fiddle exhibits classical influences to enhance the song’s texture. Then, with the return of the vocals, the single from Morganway briefly takes on Psych Rock-like dream characteristics.

Hailing from Norwich, UK, the members of Morganway are twin brothers Callum (vocals, guitar, bass) and Kieran Morgan (lead guitar) SJ Mortimer (lead vocals, guitar), Nicole Terry (fiddle), Matt Brocklehurst (keys) and Ed Bullinger (drums). The song was written by SJ Mortimer and Kieran Morgan. They explain, “‘Come Over’ is a song about wildness, temptation, danger and ‘twisted love.’ It explores a strong independent woman, feeling powerful in her own skin, but with a knot in her heart from life’s pressures and tribulations.”

While the presence of the fiddle sets Morganway apart from most other bands, the greatest strength of Morganway stems from the ability of all six members to contribute to the vocals, as shown in the official video of “Come Over.” The video was recorded at Bedfords Bar in Norwich and was directed by members Edward Bullinger and Callum Morgan. The energy of the performance reinforces the conclusion that missing an opportunity to see Morganway in a live setting would be a mistake. Their tour schedule is available at the band’s website https://www.morganway.co.uk/.

Lyrics of "Come Over” by Morganway
There’s a knot in my heart
I’m strong yet torn apart
I feel danger lying with strangers
You don’t know me at all
It’s late and so I’m stalling, calling you now, now, now
I’m crawling, falling down, down, down

Oh, come over, come over, come over
Oh, come over, come over, come over

Come over, Come over

Feel the beat in my bones
Nothing ‘bout me can be owned
You heartbreaker, another player
I don’t know you at all
It’s late and so I’m longing, wanting you now, now, now
I hear warning, haunting, sound, sound, sounds

Oh, come over, come over, come over
Oh, come over, come over, come over

Drown it out
Come over, come over, come over
Play it loud
Come over, come over, come over

Oh, come over, come over, come over
Oh…

Walls closing in
Beauty is the sin
We’re chasing, chasing
Twisted love

Drown it out
Come over, come over, come over
Play it loud
Come over, come over, come over
Drown it out
Come over, come over, come over
Play it loud
Come over, come over, come over

Oh, come over, come over, come over
Oh…
