We
don’t claim to have the expertise to consistently identify songs from musicians
who spent considerable time generating income by busking. But there are traits
that help identify songs by current and former street artists. Successful
buskers are ones with the ability to immediately grab the attention of people who
have a purpose unrelated to music, such as shopping or sightseeing. Retaining
their attention is equally important, because very few people are inclined to contribute
to the donations within the first minute of listening.
Songs from successful buskers tend to be production-heavy
and the vocals tend to be more emotion-filled and committed to the subject
matter of the lyrics. We are fans of heavy production, unless it is so “in your
face” that it detracts from (rather than enhancing) the melody, instrumentation
or vocals. “Lies” by Jack Devlin does not cross that line and the song certainly is
characterized by commitment-to-message vocals.
At
one time, Jack Devlin was a competitive mountain biker. He was the Ulster Elite
Enduro Champion in 2018. He took to busking between rides to raise the extra
cash for the journey home. He made a “Busk to Ride” video that received
considerable attention. In the summer of 2020, he realized that a caravan
battery could power a busking session, and he was active with musician friends.
Jack Devlin is from Northern Ireland, specifically Hilltown, by the
Mourne Mountains.
