Cloud Cult are The Moody Blues of the current generation. From 1968 through
1971, The Moody Blues released five albums that were important as much for the
lyrics as the melodies and the rich vocals. Fans sat alone with their
headphones in place and the lyrics would spur thoughts about life in general
and the proper perspective in their individual lives. The band decided to inform
the world that they did not hold the key when they released “Seventh Sojourn”
in 1972. The focus single of the album announced that “I’m Just a Singer in a
Rock and Roll Band.” Worse yet, the “we don’t
want that responsibility” announcement came in the form of a Pop song. Ardent fans
of The Moody Blues were disillusioned by the lyrical message, which made it far
more difficult to listen to praise of the Pop single as the song that solidified
the band’s fan base.
Cloud
Cult are the modern-day equivalent of the 1970 version of The Moody Blues.
Neither band holds the key to life, but both have intelligent lyrics that can motivate
a listener to self-discovery and an awareness that we are not alone. Perhaps
our favorite Indie single is ”No Hell.” The lyrics of the 2015 release from
Cloud Cult include a blend of clear, easily digested insights and subject-to-interpretation
verses that invite the listener to attach personal understandings that may vary
depending upon the listener’s current frame of mind.
“One
Way Out of a Hole” has much in common with “No Hell.” The lyrics of the recent
release are included at the bottom of this post. They include clearly, easily digested reassurances:
The lyrics also include less clear verses that invite
personal interpretation and reinterpretation:
And like the 2015 song, “One Way Out of a Hole” masterfully incorporates
intensity shifts. Both songs posess far more than their fair share of
crescendos. Better yet, the crescendos are often driven by instruments that aren’t
conventional to Indie. Cloud Cult are orchestral. The band is based in St.
Cloud, Minnesota and is led by Craig Minowa. Their website identifies the
current membership as:
Shannon Frid-Rubin: Violin
Jeremy Harvey: Drums
Connie Minowa: Live Painter
Craig Minowa: Singer/songwriter, guitar
Shawn Neary: Bass, Banjo, Trombone
Sarah Perbix: Keyboard, French horn, Trumpet
Scott West: Live Painter
Daniel Zamzow: Cello, Mandola
Cloud Cult are scheduled to tour in promotion of their album “Metamorphosis.”
The album is available (March 4 drop) via the band’s Earthology Records. Among
the stops are two performances in San Francisco at The Chapel on July 6 and 7. The
tour schedule is available at https://www.cloudcult.com/.
Are we all alone?
No, we’re parts of each other
So, screw the diagnosis, you’re gonna be
alright friend
They say I can’t find my way til I know who I
am
Well, I’m a buffalo trapped in human skin
Exploding a million directions while trying
to hold it all inside

Lyrics of “One Way Out of a Hole” by Cloud
Cult
I had a dream that we were happily lost
We left the path and just wandered off
We said, “In our imagination, everywhere is home.”
Uh-huh
We used to leave breadcrumbs to mark the path
But where this is going there ain’t no map
“Hey, what’s the destination?” Heck if I know
What’s the destination?
Which way do I go?
Which way do I go?
There’s only one way out of a hole
Giddy-up, let’s go
The ancestors spoke and said you’re losing reception
You think too dang much to have any other connection
In our hearts, we are the ocean
But we are islands in our minds
Uh-huh-huh
They say I can’t find my way til I know who I am
Well, I’m a buffalo trapped in human skin
Exploding a million directions while trying to hold it all inside
What’s the destination?
Which way do I go?
Which way do I go?
There’s only one way out of a hole
3-2-1 go
Are we on our own?
No, we’re in this together
Are we all alone?
No, we’re parts of each other
So, screw the diagnosis, you’re gonna be alright friend
Uh-huh-huh
You deserve better, you don’t need that crap
You planned your whole life out, now burn that map
Say, “What’s the destination? Heck if I know!
What’s the destination?
Which way do I go?
Which way do I go?
Which way do I go?
There’s only one way out of a hole
Come on let’s go
I had a dream that we were happily lost
We left the path and just wandered off
We said, “In our imagination, everywhere is home.”
