“Fading” by Chanan Herman - A Song Feature

 

     It’s the power percussion of “Fading” that stands out while casually listening to the song from Chanan Herman. Indeed, the drumming deserves attention. It is both energetic and energizing. At times, the rhythm is assisted by other instruments, but the drumming is relentless, until the final seconds of “Fading.” The mixing varies the command of the rhythm to the overall sound, but the drumming marches on.
 
      There is much more to “Fading.” The harmonization was intelligently considered and brilliantly executed. Two dimensions of harmony are apparent – musical and demeanor harmonization. Thus, during the first verse, the lead vocals are purposeful while the backing vocals carry an air of vulnerability. But our favorite sequence occurs during the third occurrence of the “Fading” chorus. In this third occurrence (starting around 2:28), the line “Fading, fading, yes you're” is repeated three times, with only one voice during the first, endearing two-part harmony for the second, and electrifying three-part harmony for the third.
 
     Too often, a musician does not identify the other contributors to a song. Chanan Herman is an exception. Chanan is based in Jerusalem, Israel (he is from Cleveland, Ohio). In addition to vocals, he plays synth, keys, uke, and percussion. On his YouTube channel, he also identifies:
