“With A Bottle Of Whatever You're Having” by The Dead Licks

While listening to the first 30 seconds, our thought was “Please remain this engaging throughout the song.” The Dead Licks did not disappoint. In fact, the appealingly clean guitar riff that is heard at the start is later joined by another ear-catching guitar riff (1:09) and then by the piano. The bass and a catchy rhythm from the drum machine provide the foundation for the skillfully textured melody.

The vocals of “With A Bottle Of Whatever You're Having” are also deserving of praise. Like the early guitars, the voice is clear; and the lyrics are relatively easy to understand. Then, a vocal soar that occurs just beyond the four-minute mark triggers a transition. The shift is immediately recognizable in the instrumentation, as Rock guitar sensibilities replace the gentle riffs. When the vocals resurface, they too are more forceful.

In talking about the history of “With A Bottle Of Whatever You're Having,” band member Jack Grbac stated that the song was "Written during the pandemic, and one of the first songs written around a beat made on the drum machine. We sent Jimmy [Gallagher] the drum machine / main riff, and he came up with the high energy ending to the song. The song structure came about eventually, after we wrote / jammed the song for months."

The members of The Dead Licks are Jack Grbac (guitar), Tom Inzinga (guitar, vocals), Jimmy Gallagher (drums), and Johnny McNamara (bass). They are an Indie Rock band based in Chicago, Illinois, although they met in 2015 at University of Dayton in Ohio. “With A Bottle Of Whatever You're Having” will be on the upcoming album “In Disguise,” which is scheduled to drop on May 20.

While talking about the release of the “In Disguise” album, the band said, "We were planning on going on a Spring weekend tour until the Covid lockdown hit the Winter of 2020. This album was a collection of songs written and recorded during the pandemic. It was recorded at various studios around the city of Chicago, as well as the band’s apartment. We’re excited to release the album and start working on the next, as we’ve sat with this one for a while. We plan to play live shows and spread our music as much as possible in the years to come."

Lyrics of “With A Bottle Of Whatever You're Having” by The Dead Licks (With more confidence in our understanding at the start than at the end)
Many times I'd see you there
I never thought I'd be the one who cared
You were taken for granted
Oh what a pity

And there will always be another chance
With a bottle of whatever you're having
I can be your savior in the sky
Broken hearted dreams that just won't die

Caught you in a nick of time
I thought I'd just stop and say “Hello, hello”
I was taken for granted
Oh what a pity

And there will always be another chance
With a bottle of whatever you're having
But I can be your savior in the sky
Broken hearted dreams that just won't die

Broken dreams you've been living all your life
You'll be telling the kids it's all a lie

Cut to this part of the story
I wanna say that I'm doing fine
We were taken for granted
Oh what a pity

Maybe one day this will all be gone
Trying to picture a life without it is wrong
I can be your savior in the sky
Broken hearted dreams that just won't die

Broken dreams you've been living all your life
And we're all in denial (???)

Follow kids now (???)
Cause he taught me how to write a song
I just hope that everyone had fun
