“Stop Making Sense” by Mating Ritual – A Song Review

Initially, we wondered if it was commentary on the current political environment – “You’re always at your best when you’re not making sense.” No, Mating Ritual was not politically motivated during the writing or recording of “Stop Making Sense.” The two brothers from Los Angeles were more concerned with generating a strong song that reflected the different but compatible musical sensibilities of the pair.

Mating Ritual is Ryan Marshall Lawhon and Taylor Lawhon. Taylor’s love is for 80’s Synth Pop, while Ryan is more aligned with Post-Punk. “Stop Making Sense” is a song in which Taylor’s tastes are more apparent. On the other hand, the guitar in “Low Light” more clearly shows Ryan’s influences. Both songs are embedded in this post, as is “Light Myself On Fire,” which is the title track of their recently released sophomore album.

Mating Ritual is scheduled to visit San Francisco on June 23, 2018. For ticket information to the show at the Brick & Mortar, CLICK HERE.

Lyrics of “Stop Making Sense” by Mating Ritual
This is your call
Turn it off, turn off your mind
I wanna know more of you in the light
I close my eyes
See us swaying side by side
Maybe feel a little more alive
Feel a little close with you tonight

Stop making sense
Quit talking
Stop making sense
Start falling
Stop making sense
Hold onto me
You’re always at your best
When you’re not making sense

No time for words
Let em lie, let em lie down
All things we’ve heard
Mean next to nothing now…
Let’s stay up high,
Come back down when we like
Never running outta time
Just leaving our minds behind

Stop making sense
Quit talking
Stop making sense
Start falling
Stop making sense
Hold onto me
You’re always at your best
When you’re not making sense
{Repeat]
