“Drink The Water” by T.O.L.D. – A Song Feature

T.O.L.D. ingeniously layers sit-back backing vocals with lean-forward lead vocals. The motivation to lean in stems from the undeniable purposefulness in the delivery of the lyrics. The conviction in the lead vocals triggers a desire to understand the message, particularly because of the contrast with the meditative backing vocals. The instrumental support is equally interesting, since the instrumentation is aligned with the power of the lead vocals when percussion takes a role, while being more aligned with the gentle beauty of the backing vocals when the percussion drops away.

T.O.L.D. is an acronym for The Order of Life and Death and is the performance name of Daniel James Smith. He is based in Los Angeles, after moving from the UK in 2014. He explains “Drink The Water” as a combination of a near-devotional perspective on water and a yearning to see the sun:
“No matter how much money you have, no matter how much fame, power, or happiness you experience. Your basic need is still water. It is the essence of life, without it we couldn't survive. It is the great equalizer of humanity. I had spent a year in the English countryside, in a town famous for its natural spring water which flowed around and under my studio. The dark days made me feel depressed and I would drink gallons of this fresh water, feeling the abundance of the most nourishing substance on the planet. The freshest and best source of it on the planet under my feet. I craved the sun and when it finally came back, this song poured out of me.”

“Drink The Water” is a single on T.O.L.D.’s two-song release “Its not about the Water.“ The other track is “Cloudier,” which features USE. “Drink The Water” and “Cloudier” are available via Bandcamp - Bandcamp.com/album/its-not-about-the-water.       The bio of T.O.L.D. includes:
The name was inspired by Gustav Klimt's painting "Death and Life," which the British producer first saw as a teenager. Smith got his start in the London underground -- where he experimented with different facets of pop music and self-released his own material -- and moved to Los Angeles in 2014, where he began work on T.O.L.D. His first release, the Heaven EP, was produced by Birgir Þórarinsson (GusGus) and included the tropical-tinged "Lucifer's Eyes," which merged Bastille's breathless indie rock with Kygo's steel drums.

Lyrics of “Drink The Water” by T.O.L.D.
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water

Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water

Sun
The sun
The sun
I need the sun
The sun
The sun

Because I've seen the horror
I stare at it all and I see the horror
Seeing the horror
I stare at the wall and I see the horror

Sun
The sun
The sun
I need the sun
The sun
The sun
Because I've seen the horror
I stare at it all and I see the horror
Seeing the horror
I stare at the wall and I see the horror

Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water

[Fading]
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
Drinking the water
You get on the floor and you drink the water
