“Break in the Willow” by Vandalye - A Song Feature

A song that unexpectedly transitions from acoustic to electric guitar without interrupting the melodic flow can trigger an exhilaration. Vandalye execute the transition so skillfully in their single “Break in the Willow” that a warm appreciation surfaces even after multiple listens, when the shift is no longer surprising and is instead anticipated. At the 1:27 mark of “Break in the Willow,” the electric guitars enter and a slowly building crescendo begins. The build accelerates when a more resonant guitar drives the song, starting at 1:44.

Importantly, “Break in the Willow” is also strong before and after the “plugged” segment. Vandalye begin their single with a calming acoustic guitar and gentle vocals. At times, the harmony is emphasized and the vocals become even more attractive. At the 0:51 mark, the percussion joins, increasing the texture of the song. Then at the end of “Break in the Willow,” it’s the acoustic return, but now the cello (we think) can be heard.

“Break in the Willow” is a single from the debut album “Cigarettes and Minarets.” Vandalye is a Folk Rock band based in Dubai, U.A.E. The band includes identical twins Lucas and Thomas McCone, along with Scott Attew. In an explanation of the song, Lucas said:
“My twin brother and I played tennis for 15 years at quite a high level but we were never passionate about it. It was only when we discovered music that we realized that tennis wasn't what we wanted to do, so we wrote the song ‘Break in the Willow' about that journey. Although Scott is the lead singer of Vandalye, my twin brother and I sing this song instead.”

     Quoting their bio:
Vandalye has had the privilege of performing their originals for a number of large international acts. In November of 2016, they opened up for Lionel Richie at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, playing to a crowd of over 25,000 people. Vandalye has more recently been the opening act for Elton John at the Dubai Autism Rocks Arena, Snow Patrol at the Dubai Media City Amphitheater and Morcheeba at the Dubai Opera. Vandalye have just released their debut album 'Cigarettes & Minarets' which came out in February 2020.
