“Kept” by Stolen Jars – An Album Review

If there were an “Overseer of the Music Universal" with the responsibility of maintaining justice in the Universe, Stolen Jars would become “big” shortly after their release of the album “Kept.” No, not Rolling Stones BIG! However, Lumineers big; Of Monsters and Men big.
"Kept" drops on August 28. Among the songs are "Bright Red" and "Kept, the title track. Both songs are best appreciated with eyes closed and headphones or earbuds on/in. The texturing is well conceived and executed. The thought and care that went into each song is readily apparent. Just as one illustration, pay attention to the percussion in "Bright Red." While many bands use percussion very effectively to establish and maintain the rhythmic integrety of their music, Stolen Jars take the percussion writing to a level that causes the other instruments and the vocals to be overshadowed, but only temporarily. Having almost frantic percussive beats during a single vocal note is not normal, unless you're listening to a Stolen Jars' song.

If asked for the favorite track on “Kept,” the answer will be quick and confident, but it may be different an hour later. If asked now, the answer is “Folded Out.” The song incorporates a trumpet and flute. The flute gently guides a listener to the 2:10 mark, when the trumpet treats the listener with less gentleness in leading to a crescendo.
And if asked to compare Stolen Jars to another band, we would name Freelance Whales prior to the departure of Doris Cellar. Stolen Jars doesn’t use a banjo and does have a greater texturing to its sound, but there are similarities between the two East Coast bands.

Stolen Jars is based in Montclair, New Jersey and is the indie music project of Cody Fitzgerald (guitars, keys, vocals…) and Molly Grund (vocals). However,
   1.  According to the Bandcamp site that will host “Kept” upon its August 28 release, other important contributors are Will Radin (drums, bass), Magdalena Bermudez (vocals on “Wreaths Rakes”), John-Elio Reitman (vocals on “Folded Out”), Elena Juliano (flute on “Folded Out”) and Steven Whiteley (trumpet on “Folded Out”).
   2.  For completeness, we note that the Facebook page of Stolen Jars also names Connor McGuigan, Matt Marsico and Tristan Rodman.

     “Bright Red”

     “Kept”

     “Folded Out”

According to Stolen Jars: The song “Kept” is about getting caught up in an anxious dream and trying to find a way to stay in the present moment. It remains a note to myself, a repeating idea, “keep close to the person next to you and realize the things you are waiting for will come in time."

Lyrics of “Kept”
You got caught in my head, I was feeling my teeth fall out
You said take me instead, we can follow the seas around
And I know my head is gone, spends days in worried dreams sometimes
But if it seems I’m gone for long, just know that it's with you in mind

There’s this time in my head where I’m building in days
I write five notes and I know the sound of
The second you made me a part of the way you hold
Long tones are what keep us now
There’s a chorus inside
Living takes time
Living takes time
Living takes time
Keep your warmth with mine
Living takes time
Living takes time
Living takes time

And nights that we were lost in caves
I wouldn’t trade new tales (Layered: Stay, stay we’ll live without names)
For another way home (Layered: We can pause the day
We can pause the day, we can pause the...)
And I know my head is gone, spends days in worried dreams sometimes
But if it seems I’m gone for long, just know that it's with you in mind

There’s this time in my head where I’m building in days
I write five notes and I know the sound of
The second you made me a part of the way you hold
Long tones are what keep us now
There’s a chorus inside
Living takes time
Living takes time
Living takes time
Keep your warmth with mine
Living takes time
Living takes time
Living takes time

But I will not stray
No, I will not stray
No, I will not stray
No, I will not stray
No, I will not stray
No, I will not stray
No, I will not stray
No, I will not stray

There’s this time in my head where I’m building in days
I write five notes and I know the sound of
The second you made me a part of the way you hold
Long tones are what keep us now
There’s a chorus inside
Living takes time
Living takes time
Living takes time
Keep your warmth with mine
Living takes time
Living takes time
Living takes time

There’s this time in my head where I’m building in days
I write five notes and I know the sound of
The second you made me a part of the way you hold
Long tones are what keep us now
There’s a chorus inside
Living takes time
Living takes time
Living takes time
Keep your warmth with mine
Living takes time
Living takes time
Living takes time
