“Light Me Up” by The Coronas – A Song Feature

The strength of and draw to the vocals in the music from The Coronas is difficult to match. So, it was surprising to listen to “Light Me Up” and conclude that the vocal appeal exceeded expectations. Certainly, the choired chorus jumps the bar set by previous releases from the Irish band. But until the song is played at least ten times, the elegant power of the chorus draws attention away from the passion during the verses. The emotional investment in the message is uplifting.

Frontman Danny O’Reilly says of the track:
“For me, ‘Light Me Up’ is about the importance of having someone in your life that knows the real you. I think everyone has moments of self-doubt in certain aspects of their lives, but having someone you can truly be yourself around and just feel accepted and appreciated despite whatever flaws you may have is extremely comforting.”

Instrumentally, “Light Me Up” begins with piano. Later, instruments are rhythm-heavy while the vocals carry the rhythm. The single will be on The Coronas' July 31 release of their album "True Love Waits." Quoting content regarding the album:
Lyrically, "True Love Waits" addresses everything from a new love in Danny’s life to looking back at past achievements with pride to dealing with [the amiable departure of band member Dave McPhillips]. It’s a career spanning retrospective with an optimistic look to the future as Danny says, “We never thought we’d make six albums, or be as excited about music as we are now. It’s great that we’re not trying to compete with anyone else. We’d rather just outdo ourselves.”

The members of the Dublin, Ireland band are Conor Egan, Graham Knox, and Danny O'Reilly. Ironically, coronavirus deprived fans of opportunities to see The Coronas in various U.S. cities, including San Francisco. The positive news is that tour dates outside of Ireland are being rescheduled for 2021. Notably, the band’s name actually came from the typewriter in the Cameron Crowe film “Almost Famous.”

Lyrics of “Light Me Up” by The Coronas (some best guesses)
Have you had enough?
'Cause we're losing all the things that made us good
But I'll never deceive, no I'll never deceive you, love
At least we agreed to disagree on that
Ah

Am I freaking out?
'Cause I'm screaming all these things inside my mouth
I wanna believe, yeah I wanna believe them now
You don't have to say if we're having a good time

You tell me I made it
But I'm feeling kinda strange
Can I get a reaction?
Give me something I can say
And if I could just find it
I think it's somewhere in my flaws
You don't mind it though
You just light me up

Oh, can I press restart?
I couldn't ever miss the changing of your heart
Well I don't wanna believe, I don't wanna believe how you were
Remember when you said we'd never fall apart?
Oh

Am I just scared?
That I'll never be as strong without you there
That everything we built is gone beyond repair
But we never give up, no we never give up on us
Oh

You tell me I made it
But I'm feeling kinda strange
Can I get a reaction?
Give me something I can say
And if I could just find it
I think it's somewhere in my flaws
You don't mind it though
You just light me up

You don't mind it though
You just light me up
You never tried to cut me off
You always liked the way I talked
You don't mind it though
You just light me up
Is it something that you saw?
I think it's somewhere in my soul

You tell me I made it
But I'm feeling kinda strange
Can I get a reaction?
Give me something I can say
If I could just find it
I think it's somewhere in my flaws
No, you wouldn't have minded
No, you wouldn't have minded

You tell me I made it
But I'm feeling kinda strange
Can I get a reaction?
Give me something I can say
And if I could just find it
I think it's somewhere in my flaws
You don't mind it though
You just light me up
