"We Could Start A War" by Somebody's Child – A Song Feature

Somebody's Child skillfully and near-seamlessly executes multiple shifts in intensity, tempo, and vocal register during "We Could Start A War.” The most attractive example is in the final minute, when guitar-melting Rock transitions to an isolated, slow-play, reverberated guitar. But there are others that deserve attention, such as the percussion-lead jumpstart when the song reaches its chorus at 0:43.

The vocals are carried by the distinctive voice characteristics of Cian Godfrey, who wrote "We Could Start A War" with Shea Tohill. Somebody’s Child began as the moniker of vocalist/songwriter Cian Godfrey in Dublin, Ireland. But he is now aligned with other members. Indie Obsession has been a fan of Somebody's Child almost from the start (or at least the bandwagon didn’t seem nearly as crowded). Still, we are excited about the evolving nature of the music from the band.

The lyrics of "We Could Start A War” are intelligent, while still willing to drop “F bombs.” Cian explains, “This track was written before life changed for everyone, and has developed a much deeper meaning over the last couple of months.” Compared to past releases of Somebody’s Child, “We Could Start A War” turns in a different direction and mood, channeling the anger in the world at the moment with the powers that be.

"We Could Start A War" is a single from an upcoming EP, “20-Something.” The EP is scheduled for release on August 7, 2020. Cian says the EP is “the first real taste of who I want to be as an artist and as a songwriter. It’s inspired by music I actually listen to on a regular basis. Everything before this has just been to test the waters, but for the first time since this started it feels like this is what I’m really about.”

Lyrics of "We Could Start A War" by Somebody's Child
Time runs out, and your money’s up
We could start a war
Unconvinced is America
Hiding its divorce

We never quite found the light
Can’t stop till it’s over
Pray for our sins tonight
Before we get any older

You know we could start a war
Or we could live in peace
So what the fuck are we fighting for
What are we hoping to achieve?
You’ve got me begging to bleed

And I won’t rest aside for fear of feeling pain
I will use my mind and make use of it all
And now I stand before you with my life in vain
We couldn’t work it out, work it out

And I’ve been falling from heights you’ll never know
And I’ve been standing at the bottom of the earth
And I’ve been crumbled by the forces that you own
You know

That we could start a war
Or we could live in peace
What the fuck are we fighting for
What are we hoping to achieve?
You’ve got me begging to bleed

Begging to bleed
You’ve got me begging to bleed
Begging to bleed
Begging to bleed

Oh we could start a war
Or we could live in peace
So what the fuck are we fighting for
What are we hoping to achieve?
Oh we could start a war
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh we could start a war
