“Head Up High” by Tom Tukker – A Song Review

“Head Up High” is a message of support directed to a person drowning in a relationship. Despite the sobering subject matter, each time the song hits the speakers, we find ourselves moving our shoulders to the rhythm and admiring features that might seem minor on sheet music but powerful in their execution. The “band” vocalization of “Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh” in particular keeps a listener engaged. And it’s easy to appreciate the attractive simplicity of the guitar plucking as lone vocal support at the start of “Head Up High.”

Tom Tukker is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. But Tukker spent his childhood in a more remote environment (near the forest on the edge of Hilversum) and still prefers isolation when writing his music. He has twice traveled to Iceland to work on his songs.

With the launch of his solo career, Tukker’s approach was to operate without the support of a manager or label. As his notoriety grew, he decided it would be best to join forces with 8Ball Music.

Lyrics of “Head Up High” by Tom Tukker
You got no time
But you can’t say no
Missed out on great nights
Where could you go?
It’s all too long ago

You can change the tide over night

You are flying high, falling low
Lost your mind
Running out of breath
Try to keep your head up high

Stay up late
Work away your fears
You’re losing faith
Drowned in your own tears
Can’t be yourself even when she’s here
It’s so crystal clear

That you should change the tide over night

You are flying high, falling low
Lost your mind
Running out of breath
Try to keep your head up high

Hold your head up high
Sky high
Just try
I’ll still be there for you

You are flying high, falling low
Lost your mind
Running out of breath
Try to keep your head up high
[Repeat]
