“Defying Symmetry” by Fifth Dawn – A Song Review

The start of “Defying Symmetry” is an assault on the ears of a first-time listener, but a welcomed one. The track begins with piano having a beauty and mastery suitable for a symphonic recital. It sets an expectation as to the path the song from Fifth Dawn will follow. The expectation undergoes an adjustment when the sound of a synth enters (although the official video embedded below shows no hint of a synth). The assault occurs with a shout, which is followed by vocals having a force, passion and quality reminiscent of Evanescence in its prime. Ingeniously, it’s a wakeup call in a song about being in a dream state.

It wasn’t surprising to learn that Fifth Dawn is formed of artists who attended “selective” performing arts and academic high schools. The members of the band from Western Sydney are Samantha Faul (vocals), Mark Robertson (lead guitar), Jamie Panucci (rhythm guitar), and Ethan Pye (bass). We agree with the description of Fifth Dawn as having "built the foundation for a sound that captures a combination of ambient and heavy instrumentation with the souring melodic highs of Speech Level Singing trained, Samantha Faul.”

In talking about “Defying Symmetry,” Samantha stated:
“This song is quite interesting conceptually – I was having a lot of lucid dreams at a point in my life due to various stressors, and with that came an unsettling, warped reality that became my constant dream state. In other words, I would often dream about things or settings in real life that would appear completely backwards when I would dream, and it was just so bizarre. That’s where I intended the music video to capture a lot of that imagination and feeling trapped within a dream.”

The track was recorded in the home studio of their rhythm guitarist – Jamie. The studio was adapted to suit their purpose and to make the the process workable and cost effective. Mark Harris (The Ocean The Sky, Buried In Verona) produced the track alongside co-writers Samantha Faul and Mark Robertson. “Defying Symmetry” was mixed and mastered by Henrik Udd (Bring Me The Horizon, Architects) in Sweden. The music video was recorded and edited by James Unwin and Jake Pierce of Red Boss Productions.

Lyrics of “Defying Symmetry” by Fifth Dawn
Yeah!
I play the victim in these games
In hollow worlds that circle pain
In vicious cycles, it haunts me
I feel a distance from the sane
In parallel realities
Get help now
Get me out now

Hear the cries
Oh it hurts my heart
Give it to me straight
I need to know what world I'm in
I need to feel my own skin all over
Can you hear the sane?
Are they listening?
Can you free me?

I play the victim in these games
In hollow worlds that circle pain
In vicious cycles, it haunts me
I feel a distance from the sane
In parallel realities
Get help now
Get me out now

My guard is down
All that surrounds forms an understanding
Give it to me straight
I need to know what world I'm in
I need to feel my own skin all over
Can you free me?

I play the victim in these games
In hollow worlds that circle pain
In vicious cycles, it haunts me
I feel a distance from the sane
In parallel realities
Get help now
Get me out now

I'm not even tired
All I am wakes
Turn to the future and
Oh look what we've done?
Let's play with fire
And let ends meet
Turn to the future and
Let the past lift up from your feet!

Yeah
I play the victim in these games
In hollow worlds that circle pain
Get up now
Get me out now

Tell me tell me why I'm so far away
For when I woke up I could still remember it
Oh, I'm scared to wake up
When I know I'm still breathing
To me it's my own fate

I play the victim in these games
In hollow worlds that circle pain
Get help now, free me up now
I feel a distance from the sane
In parallel realities
Get help now
Get me out now
