"Weightless" by 100 – A Song Feature

“Weightless” is a more mature and worldly-wise version of a group of 7th grade boys locking arms together and marching diagonally across a crowded playground, defying schoolmates to stand their ground. For the full six minutes, the members of 100 remain committed to their direction and defiantly indifferent to any conflicting positions.

A significant distinction from the juvenile activity is that “Weightless” is not a steady-state movement. While the song is continuously energetic, there is a sophistication in the vocal and instrumental variations. At the start, the vocals from Rowen Tucker take a matter-of-fact approach to describing the band’s perception of life for “kids born into mediocrity and low expectations in the dull Australian suburbs.” In a later verse that praises those who are unsatisfied with those realities, Tucker turns to a melodic shout – “You shoot for the stars, you shoot for the moon // So small in my memory, like looking through the wrong end of a telescope.”

The variations among instrumental approaches are more frequent and more apparent. “Weightless” begins with an emphasis on the acoustic guitar (also Tucker). But at times the brilliance resides in the lead guitar of Jaryd Lee. Then, there are portions of the song with only the drive of the rhythm section - Colby McQueen (bass) and Paris Grant (drums).

“Weightless” is the first track off an upcoming EP, out early 2020. 100 is based in Sydney, Australia. In elaborating on “Weightless,” the band explained:
”It’s a story from the hot and dull Australian suburbs, for the kids born into mediocrity and low expectation, that choose to search for a life bigger and more challenging; who, while planning their escape, will bide their time by going inward to find refuge in a world of books, music, art and film.”
