The sequence of our awareness of songs released by Amber Run was “Noah,” then “Little Ghost,” and most recently “Heaven.” The corresponding sequence of evaluations was “Noah is good, but the band should take some risks,” “Hey, Little Ghost is good, and these guys are heading in the right direction,” and “Heaven is very solid and the band took a risk!”
“Heaven” made the difference in prompting us to actively look at the repertoire of Amber Run, instead of waiting for the next chance meeting. The acappella finish is the risk the band took and they pulled it off.
The members of Amber Run are Will Jones, Tom Sperring, Josh Keogh, Henry Wyeth, and Felix Archer, who met at the University in Nottingham. The band has been compared to Mumford and Sons, because of the use of acoustic instruments. But we don’t see it. A fairer comparison would with the lead singer of Bastille (Dan Smith), particularly in the acappella portions of “Heaven” and the band’s first release – a cover of Imogen Heap’s “Hide & Seek.”
