Folks We Oughta Know – The August Version

On a semi-regular basis, a post is dedicated to the Indie Folk genre. It’s been more than two months since the last Folk post, so this one is overdue. Welcome to the August installment of the series.
We hoped to find “When Morning Came” on Soundcloud or Bandcamp, because that would maximize the likelihood that the song would reach Hype Machine. The song deserves the exposure. The song is our favorite from the album “First Sign of Morning” by The Young Folks. This is an Irish band comprising Anthony Furey, Paul Butler, Tony McLoughlin, Alex Borwick, and Patrick Hopkins.

Penny and Sparrow are Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke, from Austin, Texas. The song “Bread and Bleeding” was released in 2014, but only recently entered our radar screen.

Hunter & The Bear is a British band that has undergone some membership changes since we last praised their work. The current members are Jimmy Hunter (vocals, guitar and mandolin), Will Irvine (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Gareth Thomson (drums, vocals), and Chris Clark (bass, vocals). The latest release is “Renegade.”

For “Second Skin,” Kate Vargas is assisted by The Reckless Daughters. Kate is based in New York.

Maria Jane Smith and Victor Thell are a Stockholm duo who perform under the name Smith & and Thell.

The Bones of J.R. Jones is based in Brooklyn, NY. They will be visiting California in September, including at stop at the Amnesia in San Francisco on Septemtber 2, 2016.
