“Where's My Love” by SYML – A Song Review

     The outstanding emotive song of 2016 has surfaced. It’s entitled “Where’s My Love.” The piano isn’t complex. Nor is the support by the strings (cello, right?). The vocals aren’t demanding. But the elements are combined in a manner that positively distinguishes the song from others in our playlist.
      “Where’s My Love” is a track by SYML, which is the performance name of Brian Fennell. He was a founding member of the Seattle band Barcelona.

According to the website of SYML (www.symlmusic.com/):
SYML IS ONE PERSON
Translated as “simple” in Welsh, SYML is the creation of Brian Fennell... With a keen grasp on textural and emotive songwriting, Fennell combines bare piano, minimalist synth and string-scapes, and etherial vocals to create the sounds of SYML. Accumulating many previous placements in TV and film with Barcelona, Fennell is no stranger to crafting songs that evoke movement and image when you close your eyes. Ranging from dark to light and sad to hopeful, SYML’s songs are sure to take the listener on a journey through the senses.

Lyrics of “Where's My Love” by SYML
Cold bones,
Yeah that’s my love
She hides away
Like a ghost.

Does she know
That we bleed the same?
Don’t wanna cry
But I break that way.

Cold sheets,
But where’s my love?
I am searching high,
I’m searching low in the night.

Does she know that we bleed the same?
Don’t wanna cry but I break that way.

Did she run away, did she run away, I don’t know
If she ran away, if she ran away, come back home
Just come home.

I got a fear,
Oh in my blood
She was carried up
Into the clouds, high above

If you bled,
I bleed the same
If you’re scared,
I’m on my way.

Did you run away, did you run away, I don’t need to know
If you ran away, if you ran away, come back home
Just come home.

  1. The version with strings and piano is subtitled "Alternate." The acoustic version is a guitar based song. Which version is considered the original? Thanks.

  2. I think the first verse ;
    “Cold bones
    Yeah that my love
    She hides away
    Like a ghost”

    This verse is is explaining how the author perceived his significant others depression.

    The chorus ;
    “Does she know
    That we bleed the same?
    Don’t wanna cry but I break that way.”

    In the chorus the author is trying to convey how he feels like he has to internalize everything so that she can feel like everything is ok; don’t trigger her: don’t be sad. He is begging her (screaming in song form) for her to notice his suffering. But she is to focused on her own pain, because her pain is emense as well.

    The second verse ;
    “Cold sheets
    But where’s my love?
    I am searching high
    Searching low, in the night.”

    This verse is simply to advance the story we already know. She is depressed, suicidal, and now missing. He has walked into/ woken up to his S.O. missing. He immediately searches for her in the night because he knows she’s in no state to be alone. She’s not mentally stable.

    Again the chorus: same thing as before only now they say;
    “ Did she run away, did she run away, I don’t know.
    If she ran away, if she ran away come back home.
    Just come home.”

    This seems to imply in the last line that he is begging her to come home, which means this is it: he’s at the end of his rope ( he is praying she will just come home).

    This is proven by the next verse ;
    “ I got a fear
    Oh in my blood
    She was carried up
    Into clouds, high above.”

    This verse clearly states that the author fears his S.O. has taken her life and moved on to the after life.

    The really awfully sad part ( if it wasn’t already dark enough) come in verse 4 ;
    “ If you bled
    I bleed the same
    If you’re scared
    I’m on my way.”

    I’m verse 4 the writer seems to imply that he will kill himself if he finds out that she took her own life. He feels inadequate, like he did a bad job keeping her safe while alive and he want to follow her in death and keep her from ever having to fear anything again. The author seems to decides not to because he has hope his love is not dead, this is evident by the final bit of lyrics ;
    “ Did you run away, did you run way, I don’t need to know.
    If you ran away, if you ran away, come back home.
    Just come home.”

    The author seems to reach a decently healthy place where he can understand that he isn’t reaponsible for her actions, he is responsible for his own. He is still begging her to come home, however, he is giving her the power and the control that even her mind has taken from her through the form of depression.

    4. As you listen further and further into the song it seems to dictate someone that is missing or lost because of the verse “I’ve got a fear…oh in my blood …she was carried up into the clouds high above”

      He doesn’t know whether she ran away or whether she is dead but she abruptly disappeared from his life and he is feeling the deeply unnerving emotions that follow.

      Just my take. 🤷‍♂️

  5. Personally I think this song has to do with the way we love ourselves. Meaning that when we do things that hurt us this proves that we do not take care of ourselves, we do not know how to love ourselves and we keep making mistakes. So from the title and most of the lyrics is that something bad happened and we lost the love we know for ourselves..

  7. Hey I just want wanted to share my review of the song because it’s literally just so deep in my head I just have to let it out

    For me, the song is about a lover committing suicide. “She hides away like a ghost” indicates that his lover is slowly fading away and he does see it.

    Then “does she knows that we bleed the same” at first I thought it meant that although she doesn’t see it he does relate to her and her pain.That she is not all alone in her pain. Then I read a previous comment that said they interpreted this as him suffering too but trying to hide it so she wouldn’t hurt more. I think both interpretations are amazing.

    I think that when he asks if she ran away, he does not mean it literally. He means that she might has done it, she might have killed herself. She ran away from the problems of life, but “I don’t know” he isn’t sure why she has done it.

    “If she ran away, if she ran away. Come back home.” He is denial about her killing herself and he doesn’t want to accept it. He just wants her here with him.

    “I got a fear,oh, in my blood” he is slowly starting to realise that she isn’t here anymore. She died. She did it.

    “If you’re scared, I am on my way” he loved her so much he is considering committing suicide too. To be with her. To be with his lover. Perhaps he thinks that life has no meaning without her.

    “Did you run away, did you run away, I don’t need to know” this time she is directly addressing her. Previously she was questioning why she did it but now he is telling her that he doesn’t need to know the why but that he just wants her here with him. He just wants her to come back home.

  9. "Where's my love" just by the title of the song I already have a lot of things in mind, but I don't want to be so deep, so I'll put this up in chill yet in a mindful way.

    I've listened to this song long time ago, but I never really thought I would fall in love with it just today. I didn't notice how catchy and how beautifully tragic this song was. I need to tell ya'll its my first time commenting or should I say share my understanding and opinion about a song in the Internet, I'm so proud of myself wow 👌 this is how good and special this song was for me.

    I appreciate the others interpretation of the song. I love how they're so analytical, but I relate mine to myself. I felt like the lyrics and the melody of this song captured my personality when I was facing a lot of dark and horrible experiences this past few months.

    I've been suffering mentally for years and never really tried to reach out or talk about it, I always tried to deny that it was some kind of mental illness depression or anxiety I don't know. It was getting so worst that I spent my summer break suffering with it, I was just so secretive and I cover everything from inside no matter what, I don't want anyone to be bothered with it specially my family. I've become my own therapist i sometimes got to the point that i questioned my existence i made myself feel real pain that i harmed myself butt no no i shout!! even though that sounds a little crazy but I've overcome it I'm not fully healed yet but now I'm in the process of bringing myself back again. In the song I was HER and HIM I was ALL OF THEM I realised I was the only one who understand and showed sympathy to myself i was running after my self, I'm not alone in this journey I know even my family doesn't have the full story of how bad I'm really going through, they were always there for me they're are one of the most important reason why I'm bringing myself back as a person, as a student guyss I'll do more I'll strive to bring myself back again someday things will get clearer my presence and mind will come home until the end I'm fighting and doing my best. I love you guys I hope you have great day we got this

    Sorry guys I got so carried away and I kind of got a little out from the idea of the song, but if reach this point and you read my experience. I'm thankful and so grateful that I had expressed my feelings and thoughts by the given space from this song. This opened my mind thank you so much for reading

    (sorry about my grammar and punctuation... english is not my primary language, but I can only really express something like this through english)

  10. This song only makes sense when the love he misses is his own..... not someone he loves.

    He lost his love
