“In the Sun” by Violent Mae – A Song Review

It’s still free, and we finally awoke. There’s a good chance the free availability of “In the Sun” will end on November 20, 2015, when Violent Mae releases their sophomore album “Kid.”
We aren’t proud of the fact that songs of certain genres remain underappreciated by Indie Obsessive, until we hear the song a number of times. Violent Mae self-identifies its genre as “dynamic fuzzy low rock.” Our designation for “In the Sun” would include a reference to “Post Punk,” which is one of those genres that inexplicably has a tendency to be underappreciated by this blog. It’s inexplicable because our “mind” should have been opened when we finally realized that the love for the music of Savages wasn’t short term.

Violent Mae is a duo formed of Becky Kessler (vocals, guitar) Floyd Kellogg (drums, other instruments, backup vocals). The temporarily free download of “In the Sun” is accessible at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38730955/mp3/violentmae_inthesun.mp3
The lyrics of “In the Sun” are included below. The song is a metaphor for those moments when you’re feeling warm and wishing it would last forever, but know that it will pass.
The video is also embedded below. According to Violent Mae:
"We wanted to represent how fleeting a good feeling can be. We tried to capture the feeling you get when you’re with good friends and the sun is setting and everything is perfect, but we also wanted to show the flip side to that; the sun sets, people go their own way, you have to move on in your own way...
Guitars play both atmospheric and bass backbone parts while the drums take on melodious, yet driving roles throughout. Random found sounds captured during their self- produced recording sessions at a rural organic farm contribute to an eerie mood and become an integral part of the music."

Lyrics of “In the Sun”
Maple iridescent leaves
in the sun.
Hemlock shinin' silvers
in the sun.

Lady bird dustin' her feathers
in the sun.
River shimmers, mirrors
in the sun.
How I feel with you
I'm so warm
in the sun.
How I feel with you
I'm so warm
in the sun.
Wooooooo...

Maple leaves flicker like flame
in the sun.
Hemlock shinin' silvers
in the sun.
How I feel with you
I'm so warm
in the sun.
How I feel with you
I'm so warm
in the sun.
Wooooooo...

Lady bird dustin' her feathers
in the sun.
River shimmers, mirrors
in the sun.
How I feel with you
I'm so warm
in the sun.
How I feel with you
I'm so warm
in the sun.
Wooooooo…
